Privacy Policy

Updated: July 20, 2022

This Privacy Policy describes our policies and procedures regarding how we collect, use, and disclose your information in terms of this website.

When I say “we,” “us,” and “our,” I mean myself and my dog. There’s literally no one else here.

Information We Collect

The only information we collect about and from you is email addresses for the people who sign up for our newsletter, Ruth and Consequences. We never add anyone to our mailing list. Everyone needs to add themselves. We use Mailchimp for our newsletter, so your email address is protected by a password and their internal security measures.

I maintain a password-protected database of contacts. If you contact me asking to hire me for a writing or speaking engagement, your information (email, phone number, and/or address) may be added to my database. This database is solely for my own use.

I don’t keep track of any other information. If you buy one of my books through Amazon, I send you the book, and that’s it. I don’t do anything with your address besides put it on the package to send you your purchase.

These are the only purposes we collect your information. If you ever want to be removed from our mailing list, you can unsubscribe yourself or ask us to remove you. Additionally, Mailchimp provides us with information regarding our open rate and what links readers click on. We only use this information to change and improve our newsletter in the future.

We do not share this information with any third parties outside our organization, except as stated below.

Cookies

We use cookies on our website. These cookies tell us which pages and posts get the most traffic and indicate what areas of the site we might want to change to give you a better experience. We look at this information in the aggregate. We don’t get information about any specific individual or use cookies to follow you around on the internet.

You can turn off these cookies via the settings on your browser. If you turn off cookies, you may still access this site.

Sharing Information with Others

We do use outside service providers to assist with the day-to-day operations of our business, but so far, we’ve never needed to share your personal information with a third party. If it’s ever necessary to share such information, the provider will be prohibited from using your information except to provide the services to us.

Given that the main information we collect is email addresses, we doubt that anyone would be interested in getting such information from us. However, we will share your information with a third party if we have a good-faith belief that sharing the information is necessary to comply with a law, regulation, or enforceable government request including court orders; to investigate potential violations or technical issues on our site; or to protect against harm to us, our users, or our affiliates’ rights, property, safety, or to the public as permitted by law. In compliance with various privacy laws, we must disclose your personal information in response to lawful requests by public authorities, including to meet national security or law enforcement requirements.

The only other reason we would share your information is because we’re selling the company, including this site, the newsletter, and its mailing list as assets of the company. I would never sell the company to someone if I believed they were going to misuse your information.

Most Privacy Laws Don’t Apply to Us

The Undeniable Ruth is an asset of Geek Law Firm, which is a tiny company. It’s literally me, my dog, and my computer.

We’re not in the business of collecting or selling information. I don’t believe we meet the minimum requirements that would force us to comply with the specifics of any state’s our country’s privacy laws.

We’re in the business of creating quality content. We have no nefarious intentions regarding the information you entrust to us.

Like other companies, we are subject to the investigatory and enforcement power of the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) in the United States, which oversees acts or practices in or affecting commerce by any person, partnership, or corporation.

Transmitting Your Information from Europe

We are a U.S.-based company. If you are an EU-citizen, you consent to having your personal information transmitted to the U.S. by adding yourself to our email list. Ditto if you hire me for a writing or speaking engagement.

Your Rights Regarding Your Information

At any time, you can ask us to update, correct, or delete your personal information. You can also ask to receive a copy of the personal information we have for you. We will comply with such requests as permitted by law or contract.

Safeguarding Personal Information

We have internal policies and procedures designed to protect Your personal information, including protection from unauthorized use or disclosure. We have implemented physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to maintain confidentiality and integrity of the personal information in our possession and to guard against unauthorized access. We continue to assess new technology as it becomes available and to upgrade our physical and electronic security systems as appropriate. In accordance with GDPR, we perform a self-assessment of our privacy practices and procedures at least annually.

We delete personal information that is no longer necessary for us to have as a business entity or to provide you with our products and services.

Modifications to Our Privacy Policy

We reserve the right to amend this Privacy Policy from time to time, with or without advanced notice, and will post the latest version on our site in a timely manner. Such revisions shall be effective immediately upon posting. We will post a notice of such changes on our site. Your continued participation on this site indicates your acceptance of this Privacy Policy and of the collection, use, disclosure, and management, and retention of your personal information as described herein.
