• Day 6/90 – Michael McDonald

Day 6 of the 90 Days of Awesome is in the bank! What made today awesome? Michael McDonald at Stand Up Live!

This guy's awesome - but spoiler alert - he's not a brunette anymore.

I learned about Michael McDonald from watching Kathy Griffin: My Life of the D List. I have a lot of respect for the work he’s done visiting and supporting the troops through the USO. And he played Stuart on MadTV.

Michael McDonald put on a great show – lots of smart funny stories. He made fun of everyone – the Dutch, Southerners (“Bless your heart”), people who are afraid of cats, and of course, himself. My friend Chad and I went and had a great time. Oddly enough, Michael McDonald didn’t make fun of lawyers in his show so we got out pretty unscathed. (He’s probably afraid of us.)

I really appreciate that he disclosed that has anxiety and sometimes he gets “the blues.” As someone who just took her anti-depressant, I’m grateful when people – especially celebrities – humanize mental health issues. These are issues we live with and manage to the best of our abilities. We’re not being self-indulgent or feeling sorry for ourselves when we’re having a rough time.

I wish Michael McDonald would have been in the lobby to do photos but he wasn’t there when we walked out so I had to settle for a photo with his poster. I’m sure if he did fan photos it would have been too hard to get the audience from the 7pm show out to prep for the 10pm show.

And as extra bonus tonight – as Chad and I were walking towards the theater, we saw a guy walking his 3 great danes (1 adult, 2 puppies) on the splash pad outside. They were so cute! I want to take Rosie to a dog-friendly splash pad this summer to see how she’ll react to it.

I love the smell of rain. After living in Oregon for 6 years I can pretty accurately predict when it’s going to rain by the way the air smells.

It’s usually 100+ degrees in June in Phoenix, but thanks to today’s rain, the high was only in the 90s. It was cool and fresh outside first thing this morning with the world recently rinsed down courtesy of last night’s rainfall. It was a refreshing start to the day despite being really tired.

It’s been raining off and on for the last 24 hours – and it was wonderful. It never rained hard enough to cause troublesome flooding. It was just enough to wash down the world.

This afternoon I took Rosie for a walk and it was simultaneously sunny and raining. I loved it. Rosie loves it when it rains. She walks with her nose perpetually next to the ground taking in the post-rain smells. Rosie loved one section of the grounds so much she started rubbing her head against the ground. It’s so cute when she does that.

I hope we have more days like this.

Day 4 of the 90 Days of Awesome is in the bank! What made today awesome? Lunch with Andy!

Andy Halaby is an intellectual property attorney at Snell and Wilmer – the biggest law firm in Phoenix. (Their lobby is bigger than my entire condo.) Everyone there wears a suit to work, so of course, I always wear jeans when I visit. He was also my trademark professor at ASU Law.

Andy’s an awesome guy. He’s been practicing law a lot longer than I have and he’s only worked at a big firm. It’s interesting to compare our perspectives on the practice of law and hearing his input on what’s changed over the years. We have a mutual non-disclosure agreement so I can’t tell you any specifics from our conversation. I sincerely value that we get to speak candidly about being lawyers and life in general.

I also invited myself to lunch with Andy to hear about his experience taking the dreaded California Bar Exam since he took and passed it fairly recently. I’m thinking about expanding my empire and subjecting myself to that layer of hell next year.
