• Day 69/90 – Hug from Chad

Day 69 of the 90 Days of Awesome is in the bank! What made today awesome? I got a hug from my friend Chad.

After an exceptionally busy week at work, I was grateful not to have many plans this weekend – mainly working out, errands, chores, and writing. This morning started out with a 4-mile run, and I was pleased to notice how much my endurance has improved in the last few weeks. My day was off to a good start; however, I got some bad news when I got home that took the wind out of my sails. (Don’t worry. It’s nothing earth-shattering and nobody died. It was just bad news for me.)

My day continued with errands and chores, but by mid-day I was exhausted. I treated myself to a nap followed by 2 hours on the couch watching the movie Capote. I was still feeling down when I took Rosie out for her evening walk but I was instantly happy when I ran into my neighbor, friend, and fellow legal eagle and runner Chad Belville. He was on his way to the comic book store. He gave me a big hug and we chatted for a few minutes. That hug lifted my spirits. It’s always great to catch up with him.

Hugs are a simple but critical part of my life and the relationships I have with people I care about. In college one of my friends often said that we needed 12 hugs a day for emotional growth. I don’t know if that’s true, but it works for me.

  • Day 25 of the 90 Days of Awesome is in the bank! What made today awesome? I got to do a webinar on social media marketing for the Washington Bar Association, Solo and Small Practice Section!

I spoke to law students and lawyers along the west coast about social media marketing during The Undeniable Tour earlier this year. The Washington Bar Association asked if I would do a webinar version of this talk. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity.

So today was the day – at noon, I jumped on the webinar with Mark Jordan of the Solo and Small Practice Section and spent just over an hour talking with 3-4 dozen people about how I use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, and blogging to network and build my practice. I really tried to emphasize the interactive nature of social media, compared to print ads and billboards which are a one-way communication. I also tried to focus on how important it is to make time to blog, to be present on the platforms where you choose to create an account, and to be authentic. There is no split between my professional and personal lives.

We ended the webinar with questions from the audience and the thoughtfulness of their questions suggested that many of them are ready to take the plunge into blogging and being more active on social media. All the feedback I’ve heard so far was positive, so I hope I’ve helped this group be more effective at networking and promoting their knowledge and work.

I hope I get to do more things like this in the future. It’s a bit weird to post a sign on my door that says “Webinar in Progress. Please Do Not Disturb” and spend an hour talking at my laptop screen and webcam, but it’s a lot of fun too.

  • Day 18/90: Cotton Tank Dress

Day 18 of the 90 Days of Awesome is in the bank! What made today awesome? I beat the heat by wearing an adorable cotton tank dress to work!

Apparently I don't have any photos of me wearing my gray dress so here's proof that I own and wear dresses in general.

I swear the cotton tank dress is God’s gift to professional women in warm climates. Cotton dresses are a staple in my summer wardrobe, especially since it’s been over 110 degrees in Phoenix every day this week.

Today, I went to work in a gray tank dress with a pleated skirt. It’s more comfortable than wearing shorts and a tank top. It was the perfect thing to wear to a business lunch with a fellow legal eagle. And I feel really pretty when I wear it.

I love this dress. Depending on what shoes and accessories I wear, it’s perfect for anything from a fancy garden party to an I-want-to-be-comfy day, and I always look like I’m put together. I opted to wear my little flats with it today so I could easily slip my feet out and pad around the office barefoot.

It was a bit windy this afternoon so I almost had a few Marilyn Monroe moments a la The Seven-Year Itch – but who hasn’t seen me in my undies?
